Alberta Education Mathematics Programs of Study
* Kindergarten - Grade 9 (2007, effective 2008)
* Grades 10 - 12 (2008, effective 2010)

Finnish National Board of Education Core Curricula (unofficial English versions of)
(I've extracted the mathematics curricula pages for the files below; the whole-darn-thing has information for... everything, and by "everything" I mean ... everything. Heck yes!)
* Basic Education (Grades 1 - 9) (2004)
* Upper Secondary School (2003)
Note: As I understand it, each school has the responsibility to develop and use their own elaboration of the core curriculum (such that I suppose these documents would represent the barest of minimums), so I'd say there's a lot less detail in these documents than the Alberta ones.

Now back to work!!! >_>

Nick led me to this interesting post about authenticating antique maps, which led me to poke around the maps that are sold on the Geographicus site.

It took me a little while, but eventually I found Jyväskylä on this old map:

I wonder why it was even included on this map; in the 1790s it wasn't even a city yet...was it a village then?

Oh snap! Someone misread the lettering and took the 'u' as an 'n'!

Psst...over here: Souvenir Potpourri: Random Assortment Transfer

It says that if you send Alex some random souvenir, he sends you back a couple of TheDailyWTF stickers. I got six stickers and a single packet of that flavoring stuff you add to your water bottle. (His note on it said that it was the first thing he could find and maybe we didn't have them in Canada. Well, we do.)

There are some random comments, like the ones about the balloon and the ones about British Commonwealth currency. I left one with a reconstruction of the text in the "Avalanche of Pancakes" clipping.

I love some of the comments, especially this one!

Also an interesting note is that the first souvenir you presented came from a finn also eventhough it was from Edmonton. Tuuli Mustasydan would mean Wind Blackheart if translated. Kinda cool name to have.

Why yes! That was by choice ;) I was going to post some cryptic reply regarding visible and non-visible Finns but decided not to.

People don't always read the entire thread before they post, so he must have missed the one message I left regarding my name being a nickname. But that's okay, it's still fun. It's good to make people think I'm Finnish.

In previous installments there have been a lot of people sending Alex random Finnish candy (chocolate, which Alex likes, and salmiakki, which Alex invariably hates). I guess in this installment the honour went to Poland.

  • The CD-burning LAAAAAASER on my spunky LightScribe drive is wonky. It gives me "track following errors," which is a hardware thing. It could just be a bad spindle of CD-Rs, so I brought some of a different brand up from home but I haven't gotten around to testing that theory yet. Though...it also coasters my spunky expensive LightScribe discs too, and I've successfully burned LS-discs from that package before.

  • I found a spare set of computer speakers at home and so now I have speakers for my laptop! No more crappy tinny sound from the built-in ones!

  • I also bought Titan Quest, the price on it finally dropped to a relatively Diablo II-ish level. More ways to break fingers! I even bought the 5CD version instead of the 1DVD version because I don't like how the PC-DVD label on the box kinda gets in the way, that is, the other box looks a bit better on my bookshelf. (So I'm obsessive - deal with it.)

  • I also bought a knock-off NW t-shirt over the weekend. In fact, I'm wearing it right now. I think it's a knock-off... maybe not, I dunno, it's this design. It cost just a little less than the list price on the official shop link there. I'd rather it be a knock-off, though (I know such things exist), because I don't deserve a real one!

  • Research shows that I *still* suck at CivE. (We got our midterm papers back today. My score was approximately 57% of the class average. You do the math.)

  • Okay, who put a dirty (?) sock on my door last night?!

  • For those wondering what "Ämmys ryit' än krii hetaar" on my MSN name meant, it doesn't mean anything. It's not Finnish, but it's meant to be pronounced with the vowels as in Finnish. It just sounded good.

  • I <3 Phase Diagrams.

  • English essay in the style of ... well ... crappy writing :-o

["I have pressure, you have pressure, why did you provoke me?"]

Here's for sensationalism, but that's typical of these Hong Kong almost tabloid-ish newsmagazines.
Bus Uncle interview (The cover page says "Bus Uncle: "I want to commit suicide" - which, mind, is a quotation from the article, but gee...why choose that one?)

Edit: Have they even got the right guy?

Other Bus Uncle media (a lot of it is in Chinese though...)
Highlights:
  • The above interview
  • A TV news report (Cantonese) - it mentions some of the many 'remixes' of the video that exist aside from the original version: the subtitled version (which I linked to); karaoke version; hip-hop version; 'Infernal Affairs' version; cover song version; and various cartoon versions; music video versions; puppet reenactment version etc etc.

I found this too: This document in several sections: 1) Summary; 2) Transcription of dialogue with Mandarin translation; 3) Division of incident into three 'acts'; 4) Description of the actions (?); 5) Physical descriptions of persons involved; 6) Source/Contact

It's awful, really.

What NOT to do when someone tells you to quiet down:

Oh my f***ing gosh. (That's an implied profanity alert, folks.)

For the record, the Chinese subtitles in that video are almost a word-to-word transcription of the dialogue (including bits that can't be written in Chinese characters), while the English subtitles are as good as English subtitles get coming out of HK (you'd be surprised if I told you that they're actually quite accurate - which they are).

But yeah... we're not all rude like that.

Top 20 Strangest Gadgets and  Accessories

Like, whoa.

I like the cheat pen and the wooden clock. [livejournal.com profile] theanomaly and I have seen the Radio Toaster at Sears, and it's really not a huge deal. Most of those Japanese inventions are pretty weird, and that skin stuff is gross.

Speaking of Japanese inventions, I was enjoying some steak at Earl's yesterday and one of the TVs was showing some Japanese event on ESPN. It was the 'Viking Ultimate Obstacle Course Challenge.' It was pretty...well, pretty hardcore obstacle coursing. Seriously, only Japanese can come up with extreme sports like that.

Gun crime doesn't happen all that often over there, despite what you might think from watching HK action flicks. Or HK TV dramas. That's probably because gun blanks and explosives for special effects are cheap. (Cheaper than hiring people to do CG, I guess.)

So when it happens, it's a big deal. And it's an interesting mystery so far, to boot.

Edit: My super-cool policeman cousin used to be something like the second-in-command guy somewhere on Lantau Island (not sure if it was Tung Chung)...he's not there anymore (he works near the Mainland border now), but seven years ago he was special there, he could park his car anywhere he wanted and could get us free food and special permission to visit parts of the giant Buddha temple that the general public isn't allowed to see :)

Hell Pizza (New Zealand)
Pick any location you want, but once you get to the order menu, you can play with the little devils that walk around on the screen :) And check out the names of their pizzas. Or the print menu, that's fun to look at too.

OMG, Rare Exports Inc. has a DVD, but it's Region 2 =(

OMG, Rajaton has a DVD* (!!!), but it's Region 2 =(

Mmm...Star Wreck touque.

*Cool, I didn't know that if you order stuff direct from their site you can get it autographed :) Oh no, does that I mean I have to go to another of their concerts or do I have to buy another full set? Eh.... I'd rather get them autographed in person, I think a couple of the albums have a perfect place for signatures (the inlay, under the disc tray)

Addendum: Rajaton shirt? Um...I think I'll pass on that. I don't mind the Star Wreck shirt (same colours - red on black) though.

A site with some downloads from the guy who wrote the music to Star Wreck 6. The "Lullaby remake" song is very Evanescence-esque, but not. Really. There's also some SW6 tracks there. (The original version of the song can be found here. It sounds less Evanescence-esque.)

Yes, Star Wreck 6 is now out for download. You can grab it on their site. A good idea is to read the 'Annotated translation' (it should be at the bottom of the 'download' page) after you watch it. Although it was intended as a guide to help fans make fansubs in their own languages, it really clarifies some of the jokes that might be missing/unclear in the English subtitles. Also, the Finnish ratings board's official rating for SW6.

Shortly after my alarm clock rang at 6am (I heard it! I heard it! I awakened!), this weird whooping siren came on. My first thought was that it was an air-raid siren, but then I heard Lea get up downstairs and look out the window to see other residents clambering down the stairs in their pyjamas. So yeah, it was a fire drill, and one thing's for sure - I'm definitely awake for my 8am class.

Now, now, no more stupid questions about Chinese tattoos.
