I've realized that German's going to be too useless for my life in Finland (not that it's super-useful in Finland either, but whatever passes as an "official" language, works). I'll take SWED 111 and 112 next year. Yeah, it'll mean a few more chemistry courses (organic? I can handle it), but it's not that my German courses were counting towards my degree anyway.

Swedish will be just as useless as German in Finland ;)

The only "difference" being that it's an "official" langauge for citizenship purposes ;)

Most Finns (the Finnish speaking ones) hate Swedish because it's a mandatory subject at school. So unless you want to move to south-west Finland (where you can even find villages with no native Finnish speaker), Swedish is as useless as German. The one language that is useful, though is Finnish :)

Speaking of which, that's probably one of the most common things people try to tell me - I know what it's like. It may not be mandatory to learn French here just to appease one part of the country, but I was forced to learn French for three years because of my school (and my hometown isn't really full of French speakers) - and I totally don't like French ("Il y a un crocodile sur la plage"?). A number of people like it, though.

Of course, a necessary part of the joke *is* its "official" status, which *would* "technically" work for the citizenship process, wouldn't it? I know French works for that in Canada.
