Dr. Sigurdson got the applause he earned at the end of yesterday's lecture.

Dr. Han, being absent, didn't.

Thursday the BSA (Business Students' Association) Year-End Beergardens in QUAD was rained out, but Friday was nice and sunny so it was up and all. It's not so pathetic that they would put on something like that, but that there were so many people lined up to get in I think the line went almost halfway around the fence.

When Dr. Osmanagic finished up the last review question he had time for, he just stopped writing and wrote "BEER TIME!" on the whiteboard, no "good luck and have a nice summer" comment or anything. Well, some students even left partway into class when they figured it would be a review - obviously they just wanted to be in the line-up to get in to beergardens.

Pfft.

In the afternoon I wandered over to [livejournal.com profile] forgottenlord's room and I helped him paint one of the bricks outside his door. (Picture later when I either get one from [livejournal.com profile] forgottenlord or I get my film developed.) Meanwhile, in one of the girls' wings, the girls were having a bit of a painting "party," you know, with some music on and stuff. Then I finished painting (went faster than I thought it would). They were still painting, despite having had a "midnight painting session" the night before.

As the afternoon dissolved into evening, the painting "party" evolved into a "painting" party, where there was more drinking going on than painting, and I had been sitting around in the lounge having dinner and watching TV for a little while. They were drinking because the year-end party for Lister residents was coming up later that night.

A group of girls dropped by the men's wing shortly before they left for the year-end party, they were pretty drunk and gawked/admired (not sure which) at my paint job, to which, seeing as I don't talk to drunk people, I could only respond with a bow.

After all, my goal was to make [livejournal.com profile] forgottenlord's brick better than all of the other girls' bricks... combined. Should still be succeeding as of yet. Girls are sometimes so shallow. They may be arts students, but that doesn't say anything about their fine arts abilities.

P.S. I found the original recording by the Irish group Altan that Rajaton based their version of this song (see above) upon - the slow intro belongs to Altan (it's not part of the folk tune itself - I don't think so anyway). I've been fiddling around playing it on my tin whistle (I have a white D whistle, looks like they don't make them that colour anymore) for the last little bit.

Edit: I messed around with [livejournal.com profile] forgottenlord's camera, but couldn't get a picture that was as good as the one he took last night (albeit it was at a bad angle so it was skewed). I did some not-very-elaborate Photoschlockage and here's the result. (Pending clearance to post name, but he once did mention that his name was so common I don't think he cares that much.)

(As I was coming in one of the girls (again?!) complemented me on my painting skills. In fact, practically the entire floor seems to be doing that. Maybe I did succeed.)

Just out of curiosity, what is this brick-painting?

The walls in Lister Hall are basically built with cinderblocks - they are concrete blocks painted over to turn them into walls - very typical 1960s industrial building style. At the end of each year, residents - if they so wish - are allowed to "leave their mark" on the wall, that is, to paint something on one of the bricks in the hallway to make it their own. Popular motifs include famous quotes, an abstract design, a national flag, favorite beer label, etc.

P.S. Do you have the lyrics to 'Kaipaava'? I can send you the mp3 if you don't have it.

Off-topic:

So what is it with the Kokopelli guy? And what does it mean? (And I knew I should have trusted my instincts when I thought kokopelli looked like a Finnish word)

I dunno. We don't find out all that much about our professors.

I have the mp3 but not the ready lyrics... but I just listened it through and wrote it down:

"Ja ilman (?) kuuta ja aurinkoa (I'm not sure about the "ilman", I can't make it out)
tämä maailma pimiä oon.
Sularaijaijai... sularallallallei...
Tämä maailma pimiä oon.

Ja yhden pojan tähden
minun sydämeni kipiä on.
Sularaijaijai... sularallallalei...
Minun sydämeni kipiä on.

Sinä hienoinen kuin heinä,
minä matala niinkuin maa.
Sularaijaijai... sularallallalei...
Minä matala niinkuin maa.

Oi jos sinä kultani tietäisit
miten ikävä minulla on.
(aijaa.... aijaiii...)
Sularaijaijai... sularallallei...

Niin varmaanhan sinä rientäisit
etkä matkalla viipyisi.
Sularaijaijai... sularallallei...
Etkä matkalla viipyisi."

In English:

"And without the moon and the sun
this world is dark.
Sularaijaijai... sularallallallei... (This doesn't mean anything.)
This world is dark.

And because of this one boy
my heart hurts.
Sularaijaijai... sularallallalei...
My heart hurts.

You, as light (? can't translate this) as a grain,
I, as low as earth.
Sularaijaijai... sularallallalei...
I, as low as earth.

Oh if you, my darling, only knew
how much I missed you.
(aijaa.... aijaiii...)
Sularaijaijai... sularallallei...

Then you would of course hurry
and not stay behind on your journey. (don't really know how 'viipyä' should be translated)
Sularaijaijai... sularallallei...
And not stay behind on your journey."

Kokopelli is actually not Finnish at all, but it's a word from the native Americans, around Four-State-Corner to be exact. :) It's one of their gods, a message-bringer and a sort of a journalist. The reason I know about it is because we traveled with my family in the area when I was twelve, and my mother, a journalist herself, adopted this god as her mascot. I really don't know any of the sagas, though, so if you're interested, you'll have to google that out. I'm not sure, but I think it was the navajos who worshipped him.

Are you at all surprised that on the last day of classes, Lister turned into an alcoholic party environment? :D

I don't think I've been more drunk for a longer time than I was on Friday. Holy shit that was fun.

No, rather, I was expressing my surprise at the curious (gradual!) shift of focus from one activity into another over time within a multiple-activity engagement.

As to your other point -
Confucius say: "No comment."

Y'know what, I don't care. Anyone who wanted to could've probably worked throughout the journal and figured out who I am. I just dislike seeing it posted online.

Anyways

THANK YOU SO MUCH KYRASANTAE

You're supposed to bring on the artificial snow machine, cover QUAD in snow, and then write that in the snow à la that Valentine's Day message *giggles*

You sure you're not supposed to be in Fine Arts instead of Engineering? :)

Pretty sure. In fact I was just about to write a post on why I'm not in arts...but that'll have to wait until I'm finished my laundry.
