Lord, forgive me, for I have sinned...

To make a long story short, I have to make a confession.

One of my friends in the United States tried to send me a knife. Unfortunately, it was of the sort illegal here but not there. So customs has it detained, pending 'determination of admissibility,' and I have to sign and return the sheet they mailed me, even though from the description they wrote down on the sheet, I checked the Criminal Code, and it's most definitely illegal. I know they won't clear it. They might even press charges of illegal importation (see section 104 of the Criminal Code, link above). Either way they can't even return it to him, they have to destroy it. But I'm certainly more worried about what's going to happen to me than what's going to happen to the knife.

It's not his fault he chose to get that one for me. It's my fault that I didn't tell him about the regulations here beforehand. And now I don't know what to do but feel close to death. I never expected to come this close to screwing myself for life, because even for those couple of times I carried my knife with me outside it wasn't like anyone was looking, or would have seen it.

Now I suddenly find my life hanging in the balance. A very life-threatening balance. Somehow I think that if the worst did come to pass I would rather die than to live with a scar so young, with so many years ahead left to suffer for this.

Suddenly I feel like I need to talk to some faith counsellor, like the really really cool Catholic priest (Father Dave) I met at St. Joe's College today. Although our tour group didn't see much of him, he seemed to radiate inner peace, which was really amazing. Maybe someone like him could lift this load off of me. After all, religion isn't evil or anything. I've already joined an Asian students' club, not realizing it was Christian. That's fine too. It's not like I think God is wrong or anything.

I'm just so loaded with thoughts right now I can't get them down on paper fast enough. So I'll leave you with that for now.

I'm not a lawyer, but I am studying to become one if it helps?

Don't sweat it too much

If it's anything like it is in the USA, the worst they would probably do is just fine you. If they ask, you could explain to them that someone you know wanted to surprise you with a gift, but didn't know that it was illegal to ship to Canada. I'm a small ebay knife dealer in the USA, and when I've checked into the laws for selling some of the stuff I sell, they would usually do is confiscate the items and/or fine me. The only time you really have to worry is if you were getting a massive shipment of illegal knives. One knife wouldn't be worth the time to take to trial for what would probably be a very minor offense.

I think lonewulf is right - it was a honest mistake & they will see it as such - now if you started getting alot of knifes being shipped to you then they might come looking for you. But go talk to the priest anyways, if he that much inner peace then just being near him would help
