When I walked into the classroom (yay, computer class) this Monday, I was really close to sitting on the right side of the room, when I saw a Finnish guy with blue eyes and shoulder-length blond hair done up in a tail, kinda like Otto. (N.B. It's a very common 'do in .fi. Some girls say such guys are lazy, but Otto makes it seem quite the contrary with his elaborate use of pins.) So I had to sit next to him. I wasn't quite brave enough (and I know Finns aren't as open about friendships as we are) to make a move, but he'd always wait for me to follow him to lunch. So I played the piano in the cafeteria three times during lunch, and he would stay to listen even if everyone else at the table had left.

He's a very reserved person though; very stereotypical Finnish. I doubt he's ever been to an English-speaking country, so his English is rather unpolished compared to many of the others whom I've met. He's also the only person in my classes who studied science as a major instead of fluffy things like English or Philosophy or Education or Business/Marketing. I think I get along more easily with science types, and he studies cognitive psychology.

Us both also seemed maybe a bit too digital-culture-savvy for this intro course - unlike the other students - so he'd sit during lecture with his arms crossed and listen and sometimes write little reminders in his pocket notebook about completely other things, while I sat struggling not to fall asleep from the instructor's heavily accented and monotone English and explanations of general stuff that I've already known for years. Whenever the prof asked if any of us had heard of something, usually just our two hands would go up. Further proof that he's in the geek world is that he was looking at computer parts online during class and that he signed his note on my flag with his online name, a literal translation of his surname.

He seemed to enjoy reading some of my writing, and when he gave me his email when I asked, I gave him one of my posters.

Enigmatic, sure, but he seems like a nice guy. He can even BS a whole five-page paper in one sitting!

I blame the 10-minute-delayed reaction processing center of my brain for not thinking (until I got to my flat) of hugging him, which in Finland is considered one possible signal of friendship.
