Ah, cool! I was just reading a little while back about how a volcano explosion in what is now the northwestern U.S. blanketed our river valley with ash a few thousand years back. I guess you found the exposed layer!

Yep, that was from Mt. Mazama, the volcano that formed Crater Lake.
