Sheila - the orientation person - seems to do rather the slapdash job. Yesterday we just kinda randomly hacked through the orientation package. Today was pretty random too, but in a different way.

I showed up at 2PM for some "interactive" flash tutorials on the computer. The people from my orientation group who came in at 10AM weren't done yet, so me and my group waited for a little bit before we could take our turns on the computers.

The tutorials were pretty silly, there's no option to skip the narration so I had to sit there and wait for the stupid voice to finish reading the stuff on the screen before I can move on to the next page and all that. Although the information was fairly straight-forward, sometimes the questions at the end wasn't stuff covered in the tutorials. Despite this and some badly-worded questions, it wasn't difficult to get 80% on each module, needed to progress to the next one. At least the quizzes and test questions weren't impossible ones like the 'describe the robber' one at Timmy's. I felt a slight bit of pity for the lady a couple of chairs down who had a lot of trouble understanding English. And I mean a lot.

We had planned to be there until 6PM, but I had everything done by around 4:45. At around 3:00, a bunch of manager-type peoples exploded into the room (which also serves as the boardroom) and a meeting sort of happened behind us. At one point, the name the of the guy next to me was brought up and he put on an inquisitive face. The guy next to me was also done shortly after me. We asked Sheila what we were to do next, but I think she didn't realize we were actually finished all of the tutorials required before hands-on training and waved the two of us to take our breaks, which we did.

Let's also take a break here and talk about this guy next to me, Wyatt. He was wearing a Rush "Snakes and Arrows" t-shirt. He looked like the kind of guy who played in a band. I started to talk about the poetry I was writing in my notebook. Intuition confirmed. He just finished high school (from the same high school as me, so I've never met him since I have 3 years on him). He's one of those power-metal guys of the fantasy type (*vomit*), and has friends who play bad NW covers (a.k.a. NW-sans-keyboards = for the lose [on the other hand, NW-sans-keyboards-but-with-arrangement = for the win.]). I asked him if he knew anyone...[you know the rest of this question], he said he didn't, but he knew of people looking for keyboardists. But of course, he continued, you'd need to first spend the several hundred bux on a decent keyboard.

I'd rather spend my hard-earned money on singing lessons, I think.

After our break we went back to the training room. We still had no idea what were to do next. Sheila walked by and made sure we had swiped our timecards after our break. Then she disappeared.

Wyatt and I continued to talk about random things like university orientation and more music stuff. I gave him my email address (I hope he can read it). Yes, I earned $11.50 an hour doing absolutely nothing!

6PM rolled around. Sheila walked by and told us to swipe our timecards again. Then she disappeared. Really.

Yesterday she had mentioned something about "getting everyone's computer training done on Thursday and Friday", but now we were done and we had no further instructions. As in, we don't even officially know when we're supposed to start actual work. Sheila had off-handedly mentioned Sunday night and 11PM yesterday to the overnight peoples, but it was by no means emphasized.

Wyatt does the day-time equivalent of my job - stocking stuff and "cartpushing" - and so Sheila didn't even mention his start date yesterday. He and I had the guy in the personnel office page her, but someone downstairs called back up and said that she'd probably gotten off work. Ohhhhhhkay. So she's gone. Great. We gave the guy our names and he said he'd talk to Sheila in the morning and call us about... uh... when we're supposed to work.

It's likely that after this training stuff - heck, after today - I'll probably never see Wyatt again, since he'll be going to U. Western Ontario to pursue his Sociology degree... and his hard rock band.

*sigh.*

Looks to me like you two completed the computerized introduction far too fast. Now she doesn't know what to do with you two. (It would be too obvious to put you two to work, duh! ;] )

Welcome to the world of work. There's probably a schedule posted someplace for a week or 2 in advance.

We learned that it was posted *somewhere* but no one told us where. Something was said about "your supervisor will give you your schedule on your first shift" and that was that. I'll probably give them a call or drop by today to get this straightened out.

*chuckles*

Are you guys Unionized?

Anyways, yes - that can be another thing you'll find: the idiots watch the clock and will get off at the exact second their shift ends. This includes all low level managers and anyone below them who are over 25 - there's a reason why they'll never get out of this dead-end line of work. This also means that if they don't have to do something (like give you another assignment), they won't.
