Synchronicity
Mar. 28th, 2006 08:38 pmI was just sitting here, about to write a (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) NW fan letter (à la a job search cover letter) in which I ask for an audition, when I decide to drop by the official site. T.H. and co. have put out an open call for singers. That's almost scary.
Synchronicity, man. Synchronicity.
I quote (emphasis mine):
Woot. That's right. Training not a requirement.
You know what, I want to do this.
I don't care if you think I suck and won't be up to par.
(Should I cheat slightly and send a slightly older photo of myself, one with long hair?)
==
Alright, folks. Brainstorm. Brainstorm. Brainstorm.
I'm gonna have to practice. Bigtime. What songs? Sleeping Sun, of course. What about non-NW stuff...hmm...probably something in Finnish (e.g. Yö - "Rakkaus on lumivalkoinen" or "Pettävällä jäällä"). And something dramatic?Apocalyptica's "Hope Vol. 2" (nope, not a song with a fade out) or something like that.
==
Edit #1: All out. No holds barred. This is what my voice truly sounds like: "Rakkaus on lumivalkoinen" (4.50 MB .MP3) A few minor lyrical slipups, but not too noticeable. Will probably fix on another day. My voice is tired out. I've been recording several other songs, but they aren't as good as this one. Hm...the sync with the original track is a little off. I'll fix that as soon as I can. I may be re-recording this using an actual karaoke track. Oh, and by the way, I was sitting as I sang this, I can't put my mic in a position where I can properly sing standing up. By the way this is actually a very 'pop' style rock ballad thingy. But I don't sing it that way. You may notice that.
I have never heard my voice soar like this before. :')
Edit #2: "Personal touch" in Nightwish songs, eh? Maybe I should complete my alternate lyrics to "Sleeping Sun" and sing those :) Though it'll sound weird over the music track with the original lyrics...a cappella wouldn't do, as there's an important key change in the song.
Edit #3: I'm getting a sense of déjà vu, kinda like back when I first found out that Canadian Idol was doing auditions in Calgary. I couldn't even get past the prelims that aren't shown on TV. But this time will be different. Back then that was the first time I had ever sung, a cappella, alone, in public, songs I hardly knew. Now I've had singing experience, three years of choir and not afraid to go to karaoke.
Edit #4: I believe I should submit something a cappella; a version of 'O Holy Night' (either Finnish or English) would definitely show off the range of my voice.
Synchronicity, man. Synchronicity.
I quote (emphasis mine):
Nightwish is currently and actively looking for a new singer/front woman for the band. We need the obvious things: Looks , charisma, courage and, of course, a big voice. Good grasp of the English language is also very helpful. We don´t necessarily need a classically trained vocalist like Tarja Turunen (the former vocalist). We welcome all kinds of styles and voices, natural and trained, from rock and pop to classical, and all that you can find in between. You should however be prepared to sing with a lot of dynamics and versatility. From loud and high to very sensitive stuff. You should preferably send us a cd containing 2-3 songs, that you consider to be your best work. If you send an album, would you mark out 2-3 most important songs, please? If you record and send Nightwish songs, then the most important thing is your PERSONAL TOUCH. Photographs are needed as well.
We will look into different applications and all candidates, but doing it this way would save us some time and energy. If you think you have it, just send your stuff to our management, and we´ll be happy to take you onboard.
