Introducing a picture of part of my desk.
Here is the photo of my desk from last year. (Hereafter "Old pic")
Open these in new windows or tabs and follow along:
Top shelf
(from left to right, back to front)
- Autographed and framed Rajaton concert programme and ticket stub; old Finnish 50 penniƤ coin resting on corner of frame
- Beer glass (better seen in old pic), shot glass (invisible in this pic)small Finlandia bottle (again, same bottle as one in old pic -> I usually fill it up from a larger stock bottle in my closet. As of right now, I don't have a stock bottle, since I have the next item), large Finlandia Cranberry bottle (still mostly full)
- In front of my booze supplies are two piles of CDs: Rajaton discography (taller stack), Tapani Kansa albums (short stack), fountain pen (in cloth protector that I made myself! - not visible)
- Photo of cousins and photo of family (are also in old pic but not highly visible), with paper model Japanese Dharma doll in between
- Barely visible model tank (you can just see the tip of the gun barrel)
- DVDs, beanie Goofy, three board/card games
Textbook shelf (normally organized differently, but I changed the stuff on this shelf around for this pic)
- High school (Grade 12) yearbook
- Course calendar
- Materials science textbook
- Calculus (duh) text
- Structural mechanics text (failed the course, dammit)
- Philosophy textbook (not for class, I picked it up used)
- English writing guide (the white coil bound book)
- Physical metallurgy text
- X-ray diffraction text
- Differential equations math text
- Chemical process analysis text w/ study guide
- Thermodynamics text
- Differential equations text solutions manual
- random padded envelope
- Organic chem model kit (that's the bit of green by my neck)
- On top of these are: box with safety glasses, Sociology of Work and the Workplace text, "Kitchen Confidential" (for English class)
Other bookshelf
- Finnish: An Essential Grammar (you can only see a sliver of it; it's the purple book)
- The Empty Mirror by Janwillem van de Wetering (yellow sliver)
- Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
- A History of Violence (graphic novel - it's quite graphic in both senses of the word)
- Battle Royale (novel adaptation in English)
- Slide rule instruction manual
- The Wreck of the Titan (novella that apparently predicted the Titanic tragedy)
- Russian Tarot of St. Petersburg deck and book
- Marcus Aurelius's "Meditations"
- 1st printing Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy
- on top of these: Stephen Fry's "The Ode Less Travelled"
- Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro (rather boring)
- English-Finnish-English dictionary
- box of yoga cards
- Lord of the Rings tarot deck
- Panda licorice, and in front of it my Zippo lighter in drawstring pouch, ring box with school ring, pocketknives
- current diary (book 5)
- copy of my NaNoWriMo 2002 novel (wrapped in blood-red cloth)
- Chinese book by a family friend (the extremely slim yellow volume)
- diary book 4 (blue w/ coil)
- diary book 1 (blue)
- diary book 2 (blue)
- diary book 3 (sketchbook)
- Sheet music: - Schubert's Impromptus/Moments musicaux, Chopin's Nocturnes, binder with misc. sheet music including my own arrangements of stuff
- Binder with tons of Finnish song lyric printouts
Desk space (the 'show off my new Star Wreck stuff' space)
- Random stuff on bulletin board
- double-disc Star Wreck soundtrack
- Big Rock beer bottle (see old pic) with my self-made Star Wreck flags (actually, the Dutch flag you see in the bottle in the old pic I left on my bookshelf in front of my DVDs when I took the bottle down for this picture)
- Star Wreck movie DVD
- me wearing the shirt and wielding latest pointy
- laptop computer (with Star Wreck desktop wallpaper)
- dictionary (wrist rest) and soft wrist rest
- extra binder and clipboards stored in keyboard tray
- folders of stuff, printer paper
- printer
- in front of printer is the sheath for my pointy
Floor
- garbage can
- my legs
- chair
- 160GB external hard drive (behind chair)
- radiator (at wall)
Right off the left edge of the picture is a set of drawers, that's where my stationary and art supplies are :)
Finally, I spent about 1.75 hours after class today making this using a scan of the DVD cover and some fan art. The movie doesn't come with an insert for the case, so I made this. I am thinking of printing on the inside of the insert English translations of the dialogue of the deleted scenes, since they don't have subtitles.
