CME 265 stupidity
Jan. 11th, 2006 10:43 pmTuuli Mustasydän:
my process analysis prof was being stupid today
peter:
hmmm... how so?
Tuuli Mustasydän:
stupid's the wrong word
Tuuli Mustasydän:
I'm going to type out the notes i took in the last couple of classes
peter:
sure
Tuuli Mustasydän:
OMG, units!!! <- <- <-
Really, if you're copying these off your lecture notes onto the board, you spend far too much time on your lecture notes.
Unit analysis: how many times have we had this lecture? Like, since high school... (although I don't understand how some people couldn't understand this back then...)
Oh dear.
*facepalm*
Is everybody confused yet? [the imperial system]
1 lb(mass) object weighs 1 lb(force). <- WTF?
32.174 (lbmass*ft)/(s²*lbforce) <-gc <-whose stupid idea was this?
^- a conversion factor to make lbm into lbf -> _so_ contrived! [actually a triple underline; can't reproduce here]
^- [eg.] W=mg/(gc)
Tuuli Mustasydän:
that's yesterday
Tuuli Mustasydän:
oops
Tuuli Mustasydän:
missed one arrow next to "OMG, units"
Tuuli Mustasydän:
today:
peter:
wow... that's ridiculous
Tuuli Mustasydän:
"when you use pounds..." you get confused.
OMG I don't need examples! >.< zzzzz... [this was on doing stuff with the aforementioned 'gc']
Americans are silly.
Energy 0.7375 Btu = 9.486*10-4 lbf*ft <-more contrived-ness.
Okay, we see the point already. Just stop. [on more stupid examples]
Tuuli Mustasydän:
then i fell asleep
peter:
yeah, falling asleep would be good at that point
Tuuli Mustasydän:
when i woke up it seems that he had done something about interpolation and extrapolation
peter:
haha
Tuuli Mustasydän:
and then he started ranting about how averages don't mean anything without standard dev and how you can make statistics support anything you want, via "how it's presented, how the data is collected, and" something else i can't remember
peter:
mmm... yeah
Tuuli Mustasydän:
including more stupid examples
Tuuli Mustasydän:
actually the comment about him copying the lecture notes:
Tuuli Mustasydän:
he started off his lecture on monday talking about you have units for every value, but "unfortunately, data is not always measured in units that are consistent with the units you need to perform the calculations" or something (he wrote this on the board, and all i can clearly remember about it was the word 'unfortunately')
peter:
hmm... not good
Tuuli Mustasydän:
at that point, i *knew* i wasn't copying down what was on the board
Tuuli Mustasydän:
oh
Tuuli Mustasydän:
he also can't spell his TA's name
peter:
that's not cool
Tuuli Mustasydän:
there was a typo on the course outline, so it said "Brain" instead of "Brian"
Tuuli Mustasydän:
he copies this onto the board
peter:
haha
