Here's a wacky email exchange.
Aug. 30th, 2005 07:59 pmThe story:
forgottenlord was in the middle of moving between two residences (with the help of his family) so I couldn't ask him these questions over MSN, since it meant hardly any Internet access for him.
Originally it's done in 'answer the question underneath the question' style, with his answers prefixed by "-->" and my replies by "==>", but I'm reorganizing it because it's really really messy to post it that way. Sorry if that means it's going to be harder to follow the exchange. Watch the question numbers carefully.
Whew, that was a lot of copy/paste.

Subject: Question time!
Hope you're enjoying your time with your parents (and your brother, hahahahaha)!
But now, it's question time!! Important questions have * next to them.
*1. So, name *everything* that comes with the room.
*2. Do I need to bring my own network cable to hook up my computer with?
3. Where are the electrical outlets?
4. Any idea how tall the shelf is on the top of the closet?
5. Is there actually any regulation with regard to the size of fridges? I'm getting one that's about the size of the one Lee had (I think Kim had one this size too, so it's probably not a big deal but I'd just like to know if there's technically any rule against it)
6. Does your drying rack somehow fit, open, inside your room?
*7. What the heck are we doing for dinner anyway?
8. Am I going to go (even more) insane?
9. Is there going to be a "Halloween Ball" or somesuch where I can go freak people out? (If I don't get in trouble, that is. Darn, that means I have to go with my cheap wooden knife prop.)
Multi-Part Question
Photo in Calgary Herald of sign: "Back to school specials: Sleeman Honey Brown"
10. What is this world coming to? The article is talking about moms and dads taking advantages of these "specials," but we know who the *real* beneficiaries are.
11. What's with people and Honey Brown ale? There's the Sleeman, the Big Rock, etc.
12a. What's with people and Sleeman? They're not as... local.
12b. Is it the small label around the neck of the bottle so the view of how much beer you have left is clear for everyone to see?
12c. Or maybe it's the clear glass, so you can see what colour your drink really is?
*13. Figured out those bookstore hours yet?
14. How much is the Chem 261 lab book? (Okay, you don't have to find out if you don't want to.)
15. When are floor pictures taken?
*16a. Remind me again whether your mail box number correlates to your room number (wasn't it that it does in Mac and Schäffer, but not in the old towers?).
*16b. What's your room/mailbox number? (In case I need to forward some mail right now)
*17. Convince me that I don't need more than 1000 evening/weekend minutes on my cell phone. Alternatively, convince my parents that I need more than that.
I think that's all for now, I've already spent all morning writing this email.

1. Desk, chair, bed, chest of drawers, shelves in closet, shelves in washroom, phone, shower curtain, toilet, sink, cupboard under sink, shower, shower knob, bedframe, shelves on desk, toilet tank cover, flusher, electrical outlets, network outlet, phone jack (in use)......I think that's it....
No, wait, plumbing :P
2. Yes....sorta.......I stole a few from work so you might opt for those. Regardless, you'll need about 10-20 feet - depending on how fancy you want to go.
3. Under desk*, behind bed**, washroom **
*so far located
**assumption
4. Remember those Lays [chips] boxes? There's one standing on end on that shelf. I'd say 2-3 feet - but I'm horrid at estimating these things (it could, very well, be 4)
5. 3 cubic feet IIRC
6. Yes - I can either make the entrance/bathroom unreachable, or block off the desk or bed (though I note, the former I haven't tried, but the latter two I can easily guestimate)
7. When was the last time we planned what we were doing for dinner in advance?
8. You're dating me - what do you think? Honestly, we'll have to see your roommates first
9. You'll be fleeing it first after you start counting the number of shots being drunk per second
10. Sleeman's is quite popular, it is quite possible that they're stocking up for themselves as well. BTW, that reminds me, my brother has been drunker than either of us.....apparently downed a 2-6 on his own or something like that.....
11. What's with people like us who don't like getting drunk? Different person, different dish
12a. ...local enough...especially if you don't like Big Rock
12b. Which has been used by several others since it was last melted.....(I kid you not)
12c. LOL
13. Shit, I was going to do that today. Sorry (they're closed now). Remind me....somehow....on Wednesday
14. Thursday you shall know
15. Oct(?) I think it's like just before Halloween or something like that.
16a. All mailboxes in Lister coorelate with room num
16b. [Omitted]
17. 1000 minutes ONLY for evenings/weekends? (As in, exclusion of everything else?)
1) You can upgrade your plan if you so need to
2) I haven't hit 1000 minutes even with all our conversations. Heck, I haven't beaten 500 minutes in a month yet.
Yeah...I was sleeping after my brother kept me up (though I note, I find it easier to sleep in my new room)

Subject: Re: Question time!
1. I wasn't *quite* looking for that answer, but it works...*doesn't remember seeing a chest of drawers but remembers drawers under bed* Gotta bring two garbage bins then. And why is your phone jack in use?
2. Ooh, you have extras? Me wants. Why so many feet?
3. Hm, no problems there, I don't think. I think there were enough outlets on my surge protector power bar that I could put my battery recharger there if I wanted to.
4. Those Lay's boxes, I think, are more like 2.5 feet to me.
5. :-/ But they won't care that much if I have a 4.4cf one will they? 3cf is more like the one you have.
6. That works, if all else fails there's always the laundry room. And it's "guesstimate."
7. Beats me, there was that one time I kicked you out though :P
8. *gulp*
9. Sounds like a new metric unit. What should the abbreviation be? Sht/s? (Resemblence to "shits" not coincidental) Is the rate near a kSht/s? What alternatives do you think I have?
10. I already declared Ryan a lost hope the moment I met him. Besides, I've seen people who have drunk *way* more than just that (but then again, I don't remember their faces, since a) I don't remember faces too well, and b) hey, they were drunk)
11. Not a valid answer. Besides, whatever happened to your "I want to write about experiencing being drunk" idea? Figured out why that's impossible to write about objectively yet?
12a. Beh.
12b. Ooh, tell me more :P ...Hey, I drink beer faster from a pint glass or my beer mug. I'm horribly slow if I drink from the bottle.
12c. Well, it *could* be important...
13. They might have a sign near the door with the times as well. Not the regular times, I mean, they might have sign for the opening week hours.
14. If you want to you can also find out for me how much the organic chem model kits are (they should be upstairs near the aisle of shelves where the engg paper is, it's close to the calculators and in the same aisle as the bio dissection kits) too.
15. Hm. Well, at least I do have my formal dress now, so I'll be able to go to floor formal. Ack, what's the Sht/s rating for that? And if it's in October, then I'll also still have my hair.
16a. Yay!
16b. *notes*
17. It's 100 daytime minutes, 1000 evening/weekend minutes (after 8pm), 100 long distance minutes, unlimited incoming. You didn't have voice mail did you? I think so long as I have call display I can find out who called and call them back if need to. What sucks is that this place doesn't have any Nokia phones. And I wanted a Nokia phone. Tell me 3 good things about having a flip phone over a non-flip phone.
More:
[18.] So how are you getting online? ETLC?
[19.] This exchange is already getting so interesting/funny that I almost want to post it on LJ (with the necessary details removed).
[20a.] Since you live at the end of the hall, in theory, can I come barrelling down the hall and crash into your room if you have the door open?
[20b.] Oh wait, since you live at the end of the hall, you must be at the end of the 'pant leg,' which means...check the fire escape sign on the back of your door. You don't happen to have one of the bigger rooms, do you? If not, where *are* the "bigger" rooms?
[20c.] Which pant leg? Red or green? (I think those are the colours) Am I correct in guessing red? (Turn right once you get off the elevator?)
Okay, that's it for this session.
<3

[21.] And it's "feral" demons, and either "awakened" or "awoken," depending on what usage you want - whether you consider the word a strong or a weak verb (strong = vowel change, weak = no vowel change). (in your LJ)

1. There is a garbage can (one, though I'd be happy to steal a second if you want to send it), the drawers under the bed are there, we've, of course, been over the towel rack now, the toilet paper thingy is there, and the all important thing I forgot: light switches
2. Because as I said in part 3 [as in, email #3 of our exchange], my ability to gauge distances is sub-par
3. There is one in the washroom. There's also one on either end of the bed and one near the closet. I'll have picts later for more detail
4. Ok, add about 2-3 inches and that's how much room you have.
5. The maintainence guys don't check the rules when they work in your room, so if Kim doesn't care and you don't get an on-duty LCA to be forced to come to your room..........
6. The JUMBO laundry room. I think it's bigger than your room in Cal
7. Yeah, I think that was the one time we planned MORE than a week in advance. Look how well that turned out, huh? Maybe the one month anniversary we also planned a bit in advance
8. :D
9. I've never gone, but half of Lister (and I note, the drinking half) does go so.... Alternative: just wander around campus dressed up :D
10. At HIS age? Certainly I've seen people that were more drunk (I live in Lister afterall), but at that age?
11. You missed my point, and I'm still interested in doing it. We'll find out whether there can be an objective position taken.
12b. Did I ever tell you about the "domestic" beer bottle? Basically, some companies (including Big Rock, Kokanee, Budweiser, etc) got together and agreed to make a standardized bottle. The idea was more oriented towards recycling purposes than anything. When they recycle them, they just collect them all,
wash them, and refill. Sleemans does the same thing, only they have a specialized bottle. Big Rock used to operate in the same way as a lone gun, but they have since changed to the "domestic" style (actually, that was like my second week at the bottle depot).
12c. I'm not claiming otherwise
13. Will look
14. Why don't you just give me your entire shopping list?
15. I was actually thinking about your hair when I wrote that. Anyways, floor formal is often 2 parts: a dinner part, and a party part. The dinner part (which I did go to last year) is pretty much dress up and act like we're classy...etc. Wine instead of beer, no shots, etc. You may like it. The second part....apparently 6Mac is banned from the bar they traditionally go to for the second part. I think the girls tried anyways and got kicked our rather swiftly last year. But yeah, that'll get you an idea. There's also a floor reunion part (at least for traditional, because they actually had tight floors), but I don't think you'd like that since it's more party oriented
17. Free incoming? I hate you!!! We could've so used that this summer. Anyways, I have voice mail, have caller ID (necessity, and [Wild Rose] needs to get it so she can start blocking [evil coworker]). Caller ID doesn't get the info if your phone is off, which is the nice thing about voicemail. Anyways, my mom has had too many times where my dad, by shifting around and such, has ended up calling her with his pants pocket while in a meeting.....and it goes for the entire meeting and he doesn't realize it's going. Nice redial button there :P.
[18.] Yes - though I think you know that
[19.] Maybe we should wait for the exchange to finish, since it might get funnier :P
[20a.] Heck, if you time it right, you could leap over my desk and through my window.... Hmm, maybe I should put a rope across my doorway, to lynch anyone that tries to barge in like that :P How far above ground is your neck?
[20b.] Don't think so. Ok, the hallway works in a T shape, we me sitting on the top of the junction. At the ends of the secondary, those would be the big rooms.
[20c.] Gah, psychic! You actually don't turn right. Right would mean you end up in the laundry room (it's the only thing you turn right for). My wing requires that you go straight
[21.] I've never heard of strength of verb before....

Subject: Question time!
1. You missed electrical wiring and the lights, and you haven't answered my question :)
3. It'll be plenty, anyway, since I don't have a modem to plug in this year.
4. I'm assuming by "on end" you mean standing on the short end.
5. And what are the chances of that? Unless I throw a fit and start throwing glass bottles at my door, which won't happen...let's just hope my floormates are a bit more understanding and don't 'port (short for 'report;' Hong Kong slang) me for weapons violations or something...what other situations call for an LCA to be forced into your room? Or I could hide the fridge with my towel! (j/k)
6. Well, I've seen the one on 4S.
7. YOU planned that in advance. Not me. I hardly remember it myself, for your information.
8. >:-E
9. But I did that last year with Mike-from-Sherwood-Park and no one saw me or cared! And I think I'll avoid Ship Night too, thank-you-very-much. And come on, you've got to have some comment on my new unit of measurement.
10. I'm pretty sure Monika (the girl I was buying booze for in grade 12, 2 years younger than me) has been that drunk before then.
11. Uh...
12b. Reminds me of what my mom told me about when Coca-Cola only came in glass bottles. They did the same kind of thing back then. But you know how some people drink pop with a straw, and then the shove the straw into the bottle? Sometimes the workers who supervise the washing machine don't notice the straws, so the bottle gets refilled and shipped out again...straw still inside.
12c. But you could be :)
14. Those are the only things that don't show up on my textbook list - well, see if there's lab manuals for EE239 and CivE270.
15[a]. *stab* *stab* *stab* "Act" like you're classy? I hate posers.
15[b]. That reminds me of what apparently happened at grad at my sister's school this year. Apparently the club that they were going to for aftergrad was the same one as the one that Western's aftergrad (the next day). Turns out the Q.E. students caused such a ruckus that the club had to be shut down, and so Western couldn't have an aftergrad party. Mmm, wine. Do they serve sangrias? (always wanted to try that, it's basically wine with juice or something)
17. Free local incoming, yeah :) Hm...call display is $5, voice mail $8... and that's only one reason :-P
[19.] Or it might get more boring.
[20a.] No comment. How tall is a head?
[20b.] Now I'm confused. Draw-A-Picture time!
[20c.] I just remembered that Kim's room was in the green wing and she had a high room number so your's must be in the other wing since it's low. And are the floorplans for each floor actually different? (Take the elevator to 4 and you'll see what I mean)
[21.] It's a feature common to languages in the Germanic family -> a classic example of a strong verb would be "to sing", since its vowel changes -> "sing", "sang", "have sung"; whereas an example of a weak verb could be "to walk", which doesn't change its vowel -> "walk", "walked", "have walked." Actually, technically, in the "awakened"/"awoken" thing, it's less a strong vs. weak verb thing than it is "to awaken" (weak) vs. "to awake," (strong) which happen to be slightly different words.

3. Ok
4. Basically, whatever way gets you to it's longest length goes from the rack to near the ceiling.
5. You might if you start stabbing people.....but in that case, I think your towel may be needed for other things (like cleaning the blood off your carpet....)
7. I don't seem to remember the other one, and you planned that one so, ha,
we're even :P
8. :-?
9. I found it humorous. [Wild Rose]'s comment was more of "for me, it'd be shts/hr". Anyway, with Lister you might build up a repitoire and just go hunting around down main lister or the Cafe and they might notice :D
10. And you were buying her booze? Wow, your position changed rather radically
11. What?
12b. *wonders if anyone has ever found cigarette stubs in their bottles..... It's probably computerized so if it can see through the bottle from all angles, good enough
12c. Well, I'm not :D

7. Technically, *I* didn't plan the other one either, I just came up with the suggestion and Hieraco put it through to UF.
8. eek
9. A repertoire of what? And if I run around main Lister with prohibited objects wouldn't I get into even more trouble than if I stayed on my floor?
10. Nah, it was more like me making a quick buck off of it (7% commission), and besides, she asked me first.
11. Never mind.
12c. Fine then!
14. I think that's all, anyway. I don't think I have any computer math labs so I don't have to consider going up to that room in CAB to buy lab manuals.

5. Don't have that many towels. And if it was any one of the episodes where Grissom has a beard (season 3+?), then I haven't seen them all, so I wouldn't know.
9. "Might" being the operative word. Some places frown upon imitation weaponry too, ya know.

14. Eew. Maple? I don't know if I'll be in the mood to do Maple labs for breakfast.
15[a]. Uh...keep the quotation marks there, I'll need them.
17. I found out that if you get them together it's $10, but if I go with a smaller voice mail package I can get both for $8.
[20c.] Last night before bed I suddenly remembered that the elevators are not at a position parallel to the waist of the pants, therefore you are correct. You go forward to get to red wing, but do a 180° to go to the door to green wing.

[24.] Don't comment on drinking and you might survive. Others....well....you might want to approach, say, [Smart Liberal] and Danielle and find out ways that you got on people's bad side real fast (apparently, there were quite a few that didn't like you too much by the end of last year). What's frustrating is your psychological situation is so much different from my own so.....it's hard trying to find ways to balance letting you live with yourself and getting you to live with your floormates. Regardless, I think we've already proven your parents don't exactly have the best idea of what's going on at school and what's *really* important in life - or rather, they have a concept of what's important for them, but have no understanding of the reasoning and logic behind having a different order in priorities.

Besides, I only asked that question because I felt like if I didn't ask it I wouldn't have anything to tell my parents about having thought or done something about that. But honestly, being anything else but what I am would be both extremely awkward and a betrayal of myself. Anyway that's a topic for the phone.
