(well, to be fair, I don't really know Metallica's music myself, and as a result I didn't like Apocalyptica's first albums too too much either.)
The song "Häie" by Tenhi (http://www.4shared.com/audio/6Pv1DhKZ/Tenhi_-_Folk_Aesthetic_-_3-01_.html) (a Finnish neo-folk -ish? band) is a piano solo, but it really echoes the third movement of that Shostakovich trio. What with the slow chords and stuff, but at least it's not an ostinato :P
