Today I took a different approach.

My classes ended a bit earlier than they did yesterday (but on the overall, MWF were more boring days anyway), so I took the same long route home as I did yesterday, but was not so worried yet about noise as it was probably only just a little while after the BG grounds had been opened.

So I decided I'd take a walk, since the weather was nice enough for that sort of bus-avoidance. It was mostly a walk to get a quick errand done, among some less significant things - specifically that of acquiring a Canadian flag badge for my bag so it doesn't look like it has a Finnish problem. First I walked to the dollar store - but the ones they had were really butt ugly. Later, when I got to the travel shop two blocks away from iHouse (on the way back), they had tons of them right by the door, so I didn't even need to look for them in the shop. It's made of a thinner material and was designed to be sewn on by machine so it didn't have the nice heavy embroidered border as my other badges do, but it's relatively inexpensive and the pattern is formed of denser stitches so that it doesn't get caught on stuff as easily and wreck it (like my Finnish flag). But here's the silly thing - I bought a medium-sized one, because the large-sized one was way too big to look good on the bag. As a result, the Canadian flag on my bag is smaller than the Finnish flag there :p

Google Earth informs me that the route I took on my walk today was a distance of about 5km. This, of course, excludes the time and the paces taken browsing through shops along the way. Google Earth also informs me that walking from here at iHouse to the Save-On-Foods supermarket is approximately 2.4km (one way).

I'm trying to get myself a sense of distance (and a sense of 'hey I'm not totally out of shape'), since when I'm in Jyväskylä, that's about the distance I'll have to travel just to get to the uni from my apartment. How I shall travel that distance I do not know yet - either by foot or by bicycle, most likely. Perhaps when I get back to Calgary I shall resolve to walk or bike from home to the Dalhousie LRT station twice a day (Google Earth says it's about the same distance one way... and uphill, at that). I've never ever had to walk more than a few hundred metres to get to school, and so I'm not used to having to travel that much every day.

I learned through the Facebook grapevine that there would be a band actually playing on the BG stage at 5PM. It was now a bit past 4, and I was originally supposed to meet my friends at the LRT station at 5:30 to go to a party. I think there were live musicians at this time also, but they definitely weren't a rock band, so I just kinda shrugged it off. But I knew I had to be out of there just before 5, and so I decided to just show up to the party early, and at that time I recall observing through a window a band setting up on the stage as I walked to the station.

The rest involved a paper hat and a fake curly goatee.
