Fun with Praat - Creaky voice!

So we learned about breathy voice and creaky voice today. The fun thing is that I have naturally a very deep voice, so my speech is actually quite creaky. Last week we also learned that "when things get creaky, the computer programs that calculate pitch go crazy", so I've shown the pitch line on the below spectrograms to illustrate my creakiness that way. (Also, sorry, lotsa background noise in my room.)

Why is it called 'creaky voice' anyway?


"Here's how I might sound like with a regular voice" (Note the teeny bit of creakiness at the end. I know, it's actually called 'modal voice' but I'm not recording it again. It was hard to say this just right.)
