i cleaned out part of my closet today, something that my mom's wanted me to do since forever (although i'm still not sure how to handle the other part of my closet, since it's full of old childhood toys i'd have to find somewhere to stow until we decide to make a trip to the salvation army or something). i dunno, it's kind of cathartic.  mom seems happy about me actually doing something about that mess. but dad always seems to have this thing going on in his mind about 'don't disappoint me' about school like a 3.5 gpa hasn't changed anybody's opinion. and about me packing for the dorm 'so much toys and music -  you're going to school, not to play'.

well i have 4 boxes of personal effects: 1 box of stationery, 1 box of schoolbooks (dictionaries and reference books) and piano music and finnish books, 1 box of board games, and 1 box of a few dvds and my bibles (english and finnish) and some small knicknacks.  i've already pulled out most of my cd and dvd collection and kept only legit discs: the ones from my 'special' bands and my absolute favourite albums. also leaving behind almost half (more?) of my board games. i'd put the cds into the box with the knicknacks, but since they're 'special' cds to me i have them in a different holder.  my art supplies box should fit in the board games box.

my sister may have fewer things but cooking and writing and going to the movies or coffeehouse are her interests and hobbies. that's why she has fewer things. i support my favourite bands by giving them credit where it's due and buying my favourite albums when i can. i bring my friends together by teaching them to interact actively by playing board games rather than passively by watching tv.

i brought hardly anything with me in first-year, and still dad had grumbled about 'taking everything with her... like moving out'.

sometimes my dad's completely unconstructive comments really make me want to pack my life into a suitcase, buy a ticket, and run away to finland - a lot of my little things are replaceable there.  except that i don't have possession of my passport.

one suitcase. that's probably the volume of stuff that dad would like to see me take to the dorm.  i did it in finland, i guess.

finland is full of:
a4 paper
beautiful music
artists
nerds
friends
free education
social democrats
small cars
vegetation
bicycles
drying cupboards
trains
sausages
department stores
price tags in shops that make sense
smaller homes but more open spaces
beautiful people

'pologies for copying your posting style, at least i use my ' key. you know who you are.

edit: i moved my disassemble-able shelving to my room and put my leftover games, movies, and music on it. kinda decided to only take the rajaton, timo rautiainen, viikate, and random finnish and classical cds with me. so yeah all the nw and dt (it's all on my computer anyway) is on that shelving now.
