It seems to be in vogue over in the NW-forum-thread-in-which-I-will-no-longer-post to record "Creek Mary's Blood," so I gave it a shot too, even though it won't be publicized there. I mucked around so much with this song it's not even funny.

Firstly, the main vocal line to this song is securely in the 'alto' range I sing in choir. So securely, in fact, that in verse three ("Our souls will join again the wild"), it goes too low for me (F below middle C).

Secondly, the instrumental track is kinda lacking in some of the solo parts from the original song, so I copy/pasted the guitar solos and the military drum bit over from the original song. The copy/pasting is a little bumpy, but that can't be helped.

Two-point-five-edly, I also recorded the wooden flute part at the beginning with my tin whistle. I suck at the tin whistle. It sounded way better when I was playing it than on the recording. Not only did I have to play that part, I also played that part a whole tone higher then digitally transposed it back because I have a D whistle, which (obviously) doesn't go down to a C. I'm not sure if it's the fault of the transposition, but it's a little out of tune.

Thirdly, I extended the ending from the instrumental track so that it was long enough to do the speech thingy. This copy/pasting was *extremely* bumpy (stupid sustained bass line in the strings), so I hope you don't get too irritated.

Three-and-a-half-edly, I apparently also suck at Native American languages, even if I practiced a lot speaking along to the original track. I think my vowel sounds are totally off, and I stumble around a bit, but I guess if you don't know the song, it's not a big deal. I tried my best. Timing was nice (due to the stumbling), though.

Fourthly, only the harmony line to the first verse was in the songbook, and it said "2nd voice sim." over the second verse even though the melody was different, so I improvised to that effect.

Fifthly, since I couldn't exactly copy/paste over the full band part over the last choruses, I just went with a crazy harmonization over the last chorus for dramatic effect. There is such a harmonization in the original, but it's quite high and I couldn't really follow it (seeing as it's not notated in the songbook). The harmony line I do is improvised (after a few takes for practice, of course).

Sixthly, that chanting bit in the middle is more difficult to do than it appears. At first I was trying to do each iteration in one breath, but that led to me not being able to take a breath deep enough to make it through the fourth iteration. You'll hear me doing something else instead in the recording. But that part was fun.

Seventhly, as a result of all this mucking, there's a bit of a lot of different kinds of singing in this. As there should be.

Eighthly, can't you tell I really should be a second soprano in choir instead?

So, without further ado: Creek Mary's Blood (7.9MB), as performed by Tuuli Mustasydän :)

P.S. I'm also rather frustrated by the fact that my sleeping pattern has been so messed up that I've missed both Wednesday's and today's lectures.

P.P.S. Tomorrow evening I'm going to watch Apocalypse Kow in concert. They're an a cappella quintet composed of Mixed Chorus alumni. Stan is a fun guy. Apparently they're a big deal at the local Fringe Festival, and they're going to be recording this concert in an attempt to get some sort of a recording out.
