Suddenly all of the spirit seems to disappear:

Many of the cars which had sported Flames flags on their windows have had them removed. Some still have them, but certainly the streets are not paved with them anymore. The local high school, which flew the flag proudly below the Canadian flag yesterday and left it up through the evening, did not fly it again today and took down the Canadian flag after school today. The house at the end of the street had rolled a teacher's blackboard, with the message "GO FLAMES GO," onto their driveway for the playoffs. Then it read "WE WILL WIN" beside an outline of the Cup. Today it was wiped clean and replacing all of the optimistic messages of the past was a sad face with a tear from one eye. Where I have not noticed a change is in the windows of many houses: we still have those free 'cheer cards' from our newspapers taped to our windows and doors.

I wonder how long it will be before all of this pride dies away and the flags and jerseys are packed away for another fifteen years until the Flames get so far again.

I went down to the CBC building near downtown today to sign the (little-publicized) banner they had there, to be presented to the Flames at the noon rally tomorrow (which I can't go to, thanks to the thing called "school"). So long I've wanted to give to them my Finnish message, well, now they'll get to see it :)
